Junior Primary

Welcome to the Foundation Phase at Underberg School, where we guide learners from Grade 1 to Grade 3 on a journey of growth and discovery. Our dedicated teachers are committed to nurturing young minds in a supportive environment that fosters academic excellence and Christian values.

In our small classes, led by enthusiastic and experienced teachers, each child receives personalised attention. This promotes confidence and encourages them to reach their full potential. We strive to create happy and vibrant classrooms where focused learning takes place. We are committed to staying informed about current educational trends and are sensitive to individual learning needs and styles. Our curriculum follows the CAPS guidelines and incorporates innovative teaching methods to ensure a well-rounded education.

Literacy and numeracy skills are prioritised through programmes such as the Time2Read Programme for reading and spelling, and Number Sense for Mathematics, allowing children to progress at their own pace. Our classrooms are equipped with various teaching aids and resources to enhance learning experiences, with a strong emphasis on fostering a love for reading and books through an engaging reading scheme.

Life skills education is integrated thematically to provide practical and meaningful lessons that resonate with our learners. Regular ‘brain breaks’ are incorporated into our daily routine to help learners stay focused and engaged.

Our holistic learning programme includes Afrikaans or IsiZulu as a first additional language, Music, library sessions, and Computer Studies using platforms such as Reading Eggs, Mathletics, Coding, and Robotics. These subjects provide a comprehensive foundation for future academic and personal growth.

Annually, our learners participate in alternating activities such as Speech and Drama and play productions, enhancing their communication skills and creativity. Termly excursions, tied to Life Skills themes, offer valuable opportunities for experiential learning outside the classroom. From adventurous hikes like Hlogoma for Grade 1 and Sangwana for Grade 2 to the first day of the Giant’s Cup Trail for Grade 3.

Sport plays an essential role in the Foundation Phase. Learners can participate in swimming, mini cricket, hockey, netball, soccer, tennis, and athletics. Physical activity promotes health, teamwork, and sportsmanship among our learners.

We encourage parents, grandparents, and guardians to actively participate in their child’s learning journey through various engagement opportunities. Our school calendar includes special events such as the Foundation Phase Gala, Foundation Phase Sports Day, and Grandparents Day, which celebrate our learner’s achievements and foster a sense of community within our school.

Underberg School is committed to building a solid foundation of academic excellence and Christian values that will empower your child for a lifetime of learning and service.
