Over 100 Years Of Excellence
Situated in Underberg, at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, Underberg School is co-educational, offering small classes from Grade R (age 5 turning 6) to Grade 7. Our unique location allows us to incorporate hands-on environmental learning into the education programme, broadening the horizon of each child in our care.
In addition to our Primary School we also offer Pre-Primary schooling for learners between 2 and 3 years old up to Grade RR (age 4 turning 5).
In our 100 year history, how far we have come! The fun activities and holistic learning taking place in the lives of our learners, parents and staff.
Honour the past but don’t live in it. Live for today, live fully, live Godly.
Have you ever wondered why you love our country, why am I here, what makes South Africa special to me?
We love Underberg. The mountains are majestic. They reach to the heavens and they are rugged and strong and immovable.
They bellow “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” This is where our school community finds the compass for our journey into the future.

Our History
Underberg Government School opened on May 22nd, 1922 under the leadership of Mr Groom, the school’s first Headmaster. With just five learners registered, classes took place in the original Underberg Farmers Association Hall near the current Trout Walk Centre. Daily lessons were only three hours long as there were so few books and very little equipment. Full school hours began on June 6th, 1922.
A hostel was then built and by September 11th, 1922 there were 24 children enrolled, 17 of whom resided at the hostel. Boarders went home about once a month for weekends, fetched by their parents in horse-drawn carriages or by a riding man with extra horses.
The main school building was officially opened on June 7th, 1939. The oldest buildings on the campus are therefore the original hostel buildings (where the girls’ hostel was situated).
Underberg School has experienced much growth since these humble beginnings, with over 4300 learners passing through its halls. We celebrated our centenary in May 2022 and look forward to the next 100 years of making a positive difference in the lives of our children and Underberg Village.
